WHY YOU NEED TO WASH YOUR DIESEL TANK

Microbes in Diesel Tanks if Left unattended, fuel in storage tanks can sometimes develop a dirty slime at the fuel/water interface. Apart from being unsightly it can block tank strainers and fuel filters. If left unattended it can spoil the fuel and contribute to tank corrosion.

WHAT IS IT?

Microbes in Diesel Tanks are mainly a fungal growth. Fuel is its main food source; it prefers kerosene or automotive diesel fuel to petrol. It is often described as looking like a "chocolate mousse". When the conditions are right, growth will occur at the fuel/water interface. Large mats of slime can form quickly and block filters. Reduced fuel stability and corrosion can also occur. The most prevalent fungus that grows in fuel is Cladosporium Resinae. Commonly called "clad" it caused widespread problems in the aviation industry before it was recognized and controlled.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

Fungi are natural soil inhabitants. Their spores, which are like very small seeds, easily become airborne and all fuels, will contain some. Spores by themselves cause no problems, but when they germinate and grow the problems begin.

WHAT CONDITIONS PROMOTE THEIR GROWTH?

Essentials - water

- Food source; a suitable fuel

- correct temperature range (10°C - 40°C)

If any of the above is absent the spores will remain dormant until suitable conditions are present.

Petrol is not a good food source; its composition is rarely suitable and lead when present, acts as a poison.

CONTROL

The key to fungal control is removal of water. The low points of tanks and pipework must be drained regularly. If all water is removed one of the essential conditions is absent and fungi cannot grow.

There are several options available to treat fungus, once it has been confirmed that this is the problem.

One option is to clean the tank thoroughly, preferably by using our machines that doesn’t require you to drain the diesel first and preventing a recurrence of the problem.

Alternatively, treatment with a biocide may be all that is required. A biocide should only be added to a fuel tank after any free water and sludge has been drained off.

If fungal contamination is suspected, samples can be tested. It is important to draw samples from the fuel/water interface and the tank bottoms.

Diesel fuel cleanliness refers to the absence of sludge, water and particulate contamination. This characteristic is significant because of the close tolerances within injector nozzles

TANK BOTTOMS

Water, rust and dirt accumulate in the bottom of storage tanks. With time, the amount of water and sediment may reach such a level that it is drawn from the tank and dispensed into a Generator. To stop this happening, tanks must be dewatered periodically; using our modern Diesel Tank washing and Diesel purification equipment.

OXIDATION PRODUCTS

If automotive diesel fuel is stored for very long periods, it can begin to oxidize. Oxidation occurs naturally with all fuels, and results in the formation of dark gummy deposits and sediment. It can be minimized by:

1. Keeping the fuel cool

2. Reducing its exposure to air

3. Only storing the fuel for short periods

4. Periodic Tank washing using modern equipment that doesn’t require you to drain the diesel before cleaning

5. Avoiding contact with copper and zinc containing metals e.g. copper pipes that have not been tinned and galvanized pipes and tanks

COMMON DIESEL FUEL PROBLEMS (PART1)

This is the first in a series of guides designed to help in resolving fuel problems.
DIESEL ENGINES - LACK OF POWER AND HARD STARTING
These are signs that not enough fuel is getting through to the engine to provide the required power from combustion. This indicates a partial blockage of the fuel system. The most likely place for a blockage is at the main fuel filter, situated on the fuel line between the fuel tank and the engine. The fuel filter is a bowl containing a disposable cartridge made of corrugated paper designed to remove dirt particles greater than 10 micron in diameter. Some filters will also remove water which is collected in a trap and must be drained at regular intervals.
The quickest way to resolve the problem is to get a sample of the fuel from the fuel tank before the filter in a clean glass jar and look at it in a good light. If the fuel is clear and bright then changing the fuel filter should fix the problem. If the fuel is hazy or has particles floating in it, it will block filters and it should be replaced before the filter is changed.
NOTE Clear and bright means that the fuel contains no visible water drops or particulates and is free of haze or cloudiness. The filter bowl itself often contains water drops and dirt, this is normal and would not usually cause filter blockage unless there was too much.
The common causes of filter blockage are:-
SUSPENDED WATER
Suspended water appears as a haziness in the fuel and is normally a cold season problem. When diesel fuel cools down during storage dissolved water will be released as small droplets. If the droplets do not drop to the bottom they will form a haze. This can seen on cold mornings after overnight storage and it will disappear when the fuel warms up. Generally seen as a greasy emulsion on blocked filters which disappears when the filter is dried. This problem can be resolved by ensuring that any settled water is drained from the tank each morning.
SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER
Dirt, rust or oxidised fuel may form a fine suspension of brown or red particles, causing a greasy black deposit on the fuel filter. Laboratory analysis of the filter and fuel may be required to establish the cause. Resolution of the problem may require change of fuel and/or improved fuel storage management
WAX
Under cold conditions wax can be seen as a light yellow suspension in the fuel. When the fuel is cooled below the temperature at which the wax comes out of solution (cloud point) it can block filters by forming a yellow waxy deposit. This is a result of using the incorrect fuel for the season or region, eg. using summer grade ADF in winter or bringing an ADF from warmer areas to a colder area during winter. The problem can be fixed by waiting for the fuel to warm up and changing the filter or by lowering the cloud point by the addition of up to 30% of heating oil to the fuel. To help prevent waxing problems you should always ensure that all fuel is changed over to fresh fuel by May at the latest. There is a two month lead time in the distribution of the fuel to ensure that all fuel available by May is winter grade for the cold period between the start of May and the end of July.
FUNGAL CONTAMINATION
Fungal contamination is a symptom of poor water draining. It is normally associated with long standing free water, hazy fuel, suspended water and dirt. Fungals are detected as a black/brown chocolate mousse blocking filters. Laboratory analysis of the filter and fuel may be required to confirm that active fungal growth is present. Fixing this problem will require changing of filters, frequent and regular draining of water, slime, sediment and hazy fuel from all storage tanks. Serious contamination may require thorough tank cleaning and treatment with a biocide. Normally a warm season problem. Prevention is by frequent and regular draining of all water.
ADDITIVES
Sometimes customers treat fuels with additives, if they are not mixed with the fuel correctly then they may block filters. The appearance of the filters and contents of the filter bowl will depend on the additive used. Sometimes the additive will discolour water in the filter bowl so it looks like fuel. Combustion improvers may look waxy. The first use of detergent additives will probably carry rust and dirt on to the filter. The problem is usually fixed by changing the filter after finding out what additives are used.
NOTE
A problem with one truck is indicative of a problem with fuel on the trucks' tank. Problems with a number of trucks indicates a problem in the main storage tank and investigations should concentrate on that tank.

Diesel Fuel Problems and solution

What is diesel fuel contamination? Diesel fuel problems generally occur over time mostly due to lack of use of the fuel. Tanks that sit with fuel like in generator or marine applications usually have the most problems. Many forms of problems can develop over the life of fuel as it gets older it will develop to a point where it can cause major problems for your engine.
Mostly Contamination of the diesel is by water and/or dirt entering the fuel due to incorrect handling. You should take good care that the tank caps, fuel dispensing fillers and hoses should be kept free of contamination to reduce the chance of contamination entering the system. You should also remove i.e. drain off water from storage tanks and fuel filter bowls on a regular basis. Using our system When you get water into fuel rust from the tanks will dislodge from the walls and block filters very easily; the other problem associated with water entry is Algae and Bacteria.
Water is the catalyst that will allow these living organisms to grow and multiply in diesel fuel tanks. There is no way to keep water out of fuel tanks; the tank must be vented to atmosphere which is normal. When the day turns from night to day the cooler temperatures will cause water to form “condensate” on the inner walls of tanks. This water then simply drips into the fuel and contaminates your system. Keeping fuel tanks full can help to reduce this effect. Other than damage to engine fuel parts like injectors and fuel pumps you can also have engines that smoke, hard to start and have low power due to poor quality fuel. What could be worse than dirty diesel fuel stopping a power generator from working in a critical power outage?
Joseto Global services is a Tank cleaning and diesel purification  Company servicing every sector of the Nigeria economy, Our Tank cleaning and diesel purification services is focused on the concerns of those organizations who uses Diesel Generator plants as a source of power supply to  drive enterprise value and deliver improved performance.

THE REASON FOR A CLEAN DIESEL FUEL FOR GEN SET

All diesel engines are exposed to problems when they are supplied poor quality fuel. Today, it is common for purchasers to buy fuel that's contaminated up to 20 percent by water from condensation or by particulates from inadequate transportation and storage. Such contamination affects all diesel-powered equipment Even if the fuel is run through the engine regularly the stored fuel in the fuel tank is sitting and degrading. Any tank that holds diesel fuel should be tested and put on a regular maintenance program. Fuel management programs focus on extending the life of diesel fuel during storage and increasing reliability of equipment. As part of a good maintenance program owners and facility operators should adopt a regular schedule of diesel fuel testing to proactively detect problems and correct them before there is an issue. Owners of diesel equipment would be amazed at what’s in there tank, the facts are if you take a fuel sample from a diesel tank you will find some form of contamination in about 90% of tests.
Joseto Global services Ltd been the most trusted name in diesel fuel filtration/polishing & diesel fuel cleaning services, also known for diesel generator fuel cleaning & generator maintenance provides solutions for stored diesel generator fuel cleaning, fuel polishing, fuel filter to clean fuel, fuel contamination, fuel filtration & generator maintenance services along with quality bulk-stored diesel fuel filter & maintenance systems. The Fuel Purification System is a self-contained fuel quality maintenance system developed for stored diesel and biodiesel fuels. The system effectively removes water and solids to 2 microns, insuring the availability of clean, dry, contaminant-free fuel for standby diesel generators and other fuel storage facilities. By maintaining clean, dry fuel, the Fuel Purification System eliminates the need for biocides and chemical additives, resulting in additional savings and ensuring quick starts and trouble-free operation of your engines. The Fuel Purification Systems can service tanks of any capacity and sizes Fuel Purification uses a vacuum system rather than pressure to clean the fuel. This has significant cost and efficiency advantages when compared to alternative ways to ensure your bulk stored diesel fuel stays clean all the time.
Diesel fuel is the blood of your engine & over time your fuel can become infected with items like algae or water can make its way into your tank due to condensation. When you get water in your fuel this can lead to rust in tanks also if this water makes its way to your fuel pump or injectors you can have expensive damage repair bills. Why wait for these disasters to unfold? Not only will you have the cost for the repairs you will have the inconvenience of your vehicle or equipment out of service for maybe weeks. People with power generators & marine equipment are very susceptible to diesel fuel problems due to the lack of use of the fuel; ie not being used enough. One way to keep a check on potential diesel fuel problems is to carry out a regular six monthly fuel maintenance in order to be sure that your fuel is in good operating condition; ensure its good to go when you need it the most.
Our exclusive products and services are only for the most advanced and pre-qualified organizations like yours to ensure that you get the most out of Diesel Generator. benefits from this opportunity are endless. Our elite employees comprised of the most dynamic leaders in the Tank cleaning and diesel purification services, who will give their unique professional and technical expertise in Tank cleaning and diesel purification services. Poor Diesel Quality: Cause of Generator Failure

If your standby power source is a diesel generator, the odds are one in eight that the fuel that's supposed to operate the engine fails to meet oil-refinery specifications. Furthermore, if the fuel has been stored at your data center for more than three months, there's a 50-50 chance that the fuel is seriously contaminated with water or algae, posing a threat to the generator as well as to essential functions that are supposed to be protected by the engine during an emergency.
Today, it is common for purchasers to buy fuel that's contaminated up to 20 percent by water from condensation or by particulates from inadequate transportation and storage. Such contamination affects all diesel-powered equipment.
In short, diesel fuel quality is at an all-time low, and there appear to be no prospects for immediate improvement.
Why the decline? Changing oil refinery standards contribute to the problem. To get more products per Naira, diesel fuel is now being refined from more marginal portions of the crude-oil barrel. Ultimately, this results in a lower-grade product that is inherently thicker and more susceptible to acute water contamination.
Mainly, however, the decline in fuel quality is due to the greater popularity of diesel power and the resulting increased demand for diesel fuel. In the past, such fuel remained in an oil refinery's storage tanks long enough for water to naturally separate and settle, allowing it to be drawn off; now, with demand up, diesel fuel seldom remains stationary long enough to separate. With global demand showing no signs of slowing down, this problem is likely to persist.
The result: suspended water is passed along to the purchaser.
How much water must be present before damage is likely to occur? Manufacturers set a general limit of 16 ppm to 18 ppm, but water in any amount is a serious threat to machinery and must be eliminated, if possible.
Why bother? Understanding the threat that water poses to a diesel generator means realizing the added burdens that are placed upon diesel fuel (as opposed to gasoline). Gasoline acts as a fuel only; diesel fuel, on the other hand, acts not only as a fuel but also must cool and lubricate injection-system parts.
Such parts are engineered to incredibly precise tolerances (up to 0.0002 inches) and any type of contamination means rapid wear or seizure. Water not only displaces diesel fuel as a coolant and lubricant for the components; it also acts as a cutting agent, scouring and damaging injection system parts.
Water that enters the combustion chamber results in even more equipment damage. For example, when water comes in contact with the heat of the combustion chamber (more than 2,000 degrees F), it immediately turns to steam and often explodes the tip of the injector.
Keep in mind that the injection system is the heart of the diesel engine and represents, on average, 30 percent of the cost of the unit. Repairing these parts is measured in thousands of Naira in replacement costs.
Water is heavier than diesel fuel and will separate from it if the storage container remains relatively undisturbed for a period of time in an end-user's bulk-storage tanks, for example. Furthermore, the less frequently the fuel is used (as in standby applications), the more likely water will separate and cause damage.
This characteristic of water (that it is heavier than diesel fuel) is the key to its removal because water cannot be separated from diesel fuel by conventional filters. The only way to remove it, and to keep water out of the engine, is through the use of a fuel/water separator.
Removing water is important not only to improve combustibility, but also to prevent corrosion in tanks, lines, and injectors. Such corrosions contribute to diesel fuel deterioration by enhancing the environment for bacteria that feed on nitrogen, sulfur and iron oxides.
In fact, diesel fuel begins to deteriorate as soon as it is produced, a problem that poses no real threat if the fuel is consumed quickly. However, such fuel may be stored for years in a standby power system; such deterioration affects the fuel's pumpability and combustibility as well as the degree of damage that it could cause to the engine.
Catalytically cracked diesel fuels, which are common today, are especially susceptible to deterioration. As catalytically cracked diesel fuels age, they tend to repolymerize, forming sub-micronic particles that scour expensive fuel-metering injectors.
As the process continues, the repolymerized molecular chain becomes longer and longer, forming agglomerates and sludge. This sludge plugs filters and causes injectors to "drool" or "slobber," thereby diluting the crankcase oil with fuel.
Diluted crankcase oil leads directly to bearing failure and shortened engine life.
Bulk-storage quality maintenance systems (such as those operated by Joseto global services Ltd) for diesel and biodiesel fuel are very effective in reducing contaminants in fuel-storage tanks.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DIESEL FUEL

AUTOMOTIVE DIESEL FUEL - Questions and Answers

         Q.  What is Diesel Fuel?

         A.  Diesel fuel is principally a blend of petroleum derived compounds called hydrocarbon distillates (heavier than petrol) and may contain additional additives. Diesel fuel is injected into the compressed air in the combustion chamber of a diesel engine where it ignites spontaneously.

Q. What is Alpine Diesel?

A. The low temperature operation of diesel engines can be improved by adding 10 to 30 percent of Heating Oil to the diesel fuel. This mixture is referred to as Alpine Diesel. For extremely low temperatures up to 50 percent of heating oil may be required.

CAUTION: PETROL SHOULD NEVER BE USED TO DILUTE DIESEL FUEL BECAUSE OF ITS INCREASED FLAMMABILITY AND RISK OF EXPLOSION.

Q. What are the principal quality features of diesel fuel about which I should be concerned?

A. Diesel fuel should be clean and free of water. It should flow properly during cold weather and should not foul injectors or any other fuel system components. It should have an adequate cetane number to provide good starting characteristics and combustion.

Q. What is meant by diesel fuel cetane?

The cetane number is a measure of the ignition quality of the fuel that influences starting as well as combustion roughness. A cetane value higher than required does not materially improve engine efficiency.

Most engine builders recommend diesel fuels of at least 40 cetane. All diesel fuels sold in Australia by BP exceed the Australian Standard 3570 requirement of 45 minimum.

Q. What is meant by cleanliness?

A. Diesel fuel cleanliness refers to the absence of water and particulate contamination. This characteristic is significant because of the close tolerances within injector nozzles

and injector pumps. All vehicle makers equip their fuel systems with filters to protect the injector system. These filters should be inspected and replaced regularly. Some manufacturers also provide filters with drain valves and recommend periodic draining of any accumulated water.

Q. How does water get into diesel fuel and what problems can it cause?

A. Water gets into diesel fuel storage and vehicles in several ways -

by condensation,

during transportation,

by leakage through faulty fill pipes or vents,

and by careless handling.

Water can cause injector nozzle and pump corrosion, growth of bacteria and fungi and plugging of fuel filters with corrosion and biological material. Both vehicle and storage tanks should be checked regularly for water and drained or pumped dry as necessary. In extreme cases biocides may be required to control bacterial growth.

Q. What is the major fuel related cause of poor diesel performance?

A. Contamination of fuel by water and dirt entering the fuel as a result of poor handling is the major fuel related cause of poor diesel engine performance. Extreme care must be exercised to ensure that fuel tank caps, dispensing nozzles and hoses should be kept clean to minimise the likelihood of contamination. Removal of water from storage tanks, vehicle fuel tanks, and filter bowls on a regular basis is important. Dry storage systems will prevent fuel

Q. Why do diesel engines smoke?

A. Diesel engine smoke is caused by incomplete combustion. White smoke is caused by tiny droplets of unburned fuel as a result of low engine temperature. This smoke should disappear as the engine warms up. Black smoke is caused by a faulty injector, insufficient air, and overloading and/or overfuelling the engine. Blue-gray smoke is the result of burning lubricating oil and is an indication of poor mechanical condition.

Q. What is meant by heat content?

A. The heat energy content of a diesel fuel is the amount of energy released on combustion of a litre of diesel fuel. It is measured in megajoules and is related to the nature of the hydrocarbon mixture in the fuel. The energy content per litre of diesel fuel is higher than that of petrol.
